The Skittles infused vodka shot at Quinton's Bar & Deli in Des Moines.
What’s the best type of shot for your personality?

One of the best time-tested ways to celebrate a birthday is by grabbing some friends, breaking out the shot glasses and tossing a few back. But with the sprawling selection of shots out there, which ones should you pick? We chatted with Tony Marcovich, co-owner and bartender that day at Quinton’s Bar and Deli in East Village, about some of his favorite shots, broken down by personality.
So, you’re finally legal, which means your so-called friends will buy you drinks until you’re slurring through spinning sidewalks. Marcovich’s pick for a boozy night is the infamous Three Wise Men shot, crafted by combining the three pillars of the whiskey industry: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel’s and Johnnie Walker. Just make sure you’re sitting down. $4.
Some people prefer to celebrate with a few close friends. Others invite every contact in their iPhone, plus those contacts’ contacts. For the latter, Marcovich suggests Quinton’s house shot: Skittles-infused vodka. It’s a simple, sweet, and can generally be taken without a chaser. Get ready to taste the rainbow. $2.
The birthdays-and-weddings drinker
For those who haven’t earned their “grizzled veteran” drinking badge, shots can sound intimidating — gag-inducing, even. For the “on-occasion” crowd, Marcovich suggests a bomb-style drink, since it’s tamer than a straight shot. In this case try an Orange Peel: it mixes Bacardi O, orange juice, and Watermelon Pucker for a tropical twist on the traditional screwdriver. $5.
Birthdays are all about indulgence, and what better way than pairing your pleasures? If you’re cursed with a major sweet tooth, then have your chocolate cake — and drink it, too — with a Snickers shot. It combines Frangelico, Baileys, and Absolut Vanilla for a satisfying treat. Don’t try to put a candle in it, though. $4.
If you lean more Starbursts than M&Ms, a fruity flavored shot will be your best bet. For the fruit fans out there, Marcovich serves up the Cherry Limeade shot, which combines Cherry Pucker, fresh lime juice, and Dr. McGillicuddy’s Cherry Schnapps. $4.
