It’s the bomb: Enjoy local comedians during the Bomb Shelter Comedy Showcase, 9 pm. at Beechwood Lounge, 416 E. Walnut St. Free.
Italian-American Heritage Festival. The Italian-American Heritage Festival returns to Western Gateway Park downtown for two days of food and entertainment starting at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. There will be music by Flying Marsupials, Sons of Gladys Kravitz, The Snacks and others, plus a bocce tournament, cooking demonstrations, dancing and more. Free before 5 p.m., $5 after. It runs through Sunday.
Clean Fido: The Animal Lifeline dog wash takes place 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Animal Lifeline of Iowa, 4521 S.E. 14th St. A $20 donation gets your dog a bath, brushed and dry.
Final Jazz in July show. Metro Arts closes out its 2013 Jazz in July season with activities starting at 5 p.m. at West Glen Town Center, 5465 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines. The Fred Gazzo Band, Dave Rezek’s Alpha State Agents and Junior Jazz Band perform, with an after party at Blue Moon. Free. Go to jazzinjuly.org.
Classic film at the Art Center: “Woman in the Dunes” will be shown at 1 p.m. as a part of the Phyllida Barlow on Film series at the Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Ave. Free.
Slutwalk Des Moines. The third annual Slutwalk Des Moines starts at 3 p.m. at Hansen Triangle Park, Second Street and Grand Avenue. The event is designed to reclaim and encourage sexual empowerment and the right of women to say no. After the walk there’s an after party at Wooly’s, 504 E. Locust St., starting at 7 p.m. with music by Peace Love and Stuff, Madison Ray and All the Single Ladies and Hath No Fury. Walk is free, $10 suggested donation for the party.
