A Q&A with ‘Vodka Samm’ painter, Jeopardy contestant Heidi Atkins McEchron
Published on September 25th, 2013 | by Ameena Rasheed
Everyone is talking about Iowa City’s own Heidi Atkins McEchron. The 36-year-old University of Iowa alumna is getting attention for her latest piece of artwork on Vodka Samm, a University of Iowa student named Samantha Goudie, who was charged with public intoxication and blew a .341 during a breath test. The painting, “An Intelligent Young Woman With a Bright Future,” was just sold on Ebay for $295.
In addition to the painting, McEchron will be making an appearance on Jeopardy. The episode will air at 4 p.m. Thursday on KWWL.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen recently sat down with her for a Q&A:
What inspired you to paint Vodka Samm?
I had seen the story on Deadspin, and I just laughed and rolled my eyes and said “Oh, here we go again, another Iowa City party school story.” Later, I was listening to River to River on Iowa Public Radio, and they were discussing the issue of college drinking in relation to the Vodka Samm incident. I can’t remember her name, but the woman referred to her as an “intelligent young woman with a bright future.” I couldn’t believe it, and my husband told me to go get it out with a painting.
