Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro travels light

Jake Shimabukuro travels light. Most musicians who travel the world have cases full of instruments and amps and roadies to haul them all. Shimabukuro can bring his instrument, the ukulele, on planes as his carry-on luggage.

“I just have one, setup is easy,” Shimabukuro said during a phone interview. “I’ve played shows where other bands are wheeling in truckloads of gear and I’ll show up with just a backpack. I don’t ever have to worry about wheeling out the drums and waiting for a band to set up.”

Shimabukuro went viral in 2006 when an uploaded video of him playing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” racked up 12 million hits on YouTube. It was something Shimabukuro had recorded for a New York TV station months earlier, and something he didn’t expect to see again. By the time he watched the video, it already had a million views.
