Two for 20: Barbecue at Bandana’s means tasty options

Des Moines has a wealth of great barbecue options. Among them is Bandana’s Bar-B-Q, which has locations spread across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. Those hoping for some good grub only have to make a short drive to Ankeny.

Bandana’s has the “down home” look going on, with lots of woodwork. It features wash basin light fixtures. It feels like it has been around for a while.

Walking in, you’ll be hit by the smell of the dry drubbed, hickory smoked ribs, which should make anyone’s mouth water. Bandana’s is a chain, but they smoke all their meat in house and all the sides are homemade.

For my lunch I ordered a smoked sausage sandwich ($6.59), a rope cut of sausage made from seasoned pork and beef in a natural casing. The cuts of sausage came piled high on the bun, and served dry so you can apply your own sauce. Options include sweet & smoky, sweet, Memphis style, southern style and Carolina smokin’ hot.

My co-worker ordered the lunch pork plate ($7.99), six ounces of slow smoked pork, served with your choice of two sides and garlic bread. Side options range from the ordinary (fries) to the more interesting (fried okra). For 99 cents extra you can add sweet potato fries, fried corn or a side salad.

A nice bonus at Bandana’s is that the menu includes a calorie count for each item. Of course, it may dissuade you from ordering the doughnut holes (oh yeah, they make their own doughnut holes), when you find out an order has 730 calories. If you’re trying to eat healthy, you can always go with the half order.

Bandana’s offers great meat and wonderful sauces. Customers have plenty of barbecue options. Too many good options is a wonderful problem to have, especially when doughnut holes are involved.
