Three Questions with DJ Cosmo

Matt Baker, 38, spins vinyl as DJ Cosmo at the Jewel City Sound NYE Hangover at 9 p.m. Saturday at Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave.
Q: How did you get started DJing?
God, I‘m going to date myself but I got started around 1992 or 1993 for a college while in high school at Council Bluffs Community School. When I started, it was CDs. After that I went to Iowa State and got started DJing a 6 a.m. time slot on Monday mornings. That’s when I started getting into vinyl more.
Q: The Jewel City Sound DJs recently started the monthly Moonhop night at Beechwood Lounge. How did that come about?
There was a void left a few months back and we saw an opportunity. We had been doing something at The Underground, which closed. So opportunity wise, it was just the right place at the right time. I would say it’s similar to Pressure Drop, with the same kind of vein of music: reggae, soul, ska and funk. We typically stick to vintage stuff, but will probably play more reggae and ska than Pressure Drop did over its last year or so.
Q: Where do you get your vinyl?
I like to dig whenever I can and go to shops around the area. There’s a nice little vinyl corridor up at Sixth and Euclid. I make trips there and head to ZZZ and Jay’s CD and Hobby. I also like to go to Council Bluffs and Omaha whenever I can. There are plenty of old places here and there for finding gems.
