Five places to enjoy fish and chips during Lent

Published on March 5th, 2014 | by Heather Torpy

Are you looking for somewhere to enjoy fish and chips during Lent? Here are five local options, each with something unique to offer.

Waterfront Seafood Market (in West Des Moines and Ankeny) has numerous options for fish and chips baskets and they are available for lunch and dinner. Portions are 6 ounces at lunch and 8 at dinner. Waterfront offers a traditional fish and chips basket (made with fresh cold-water cod, batter-fried); or walleye, catfish or halibut strip baksets. Each comes with coleslaw and your choice of french fries or sweet potato fries.

They are also served with made-from-scratch tartar or cocktail sauce. Prices range from $8.95-$14.95 at lunch and $11.95-$19.95 at dinner. 2900 University Ave., West Des Moines (11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday); 2414 S.E. Tones Drive, Ankeny (11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday).

Exile Brewing Company’s fish and chips stand out because they make their own batter with in-house brewed beer. Exile also makes its own tartar sauce. Get three pieces of beer-battered cod and herbed fries for $10 at lunch. At dinner get four pieces of beer-battered cod, herbed fries and your choice of soup or salad for $16. 1514 Walnut St. (11 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday).

If you’re really hungry, you can get all-you-can-eat fish and chips (made with cod) at Full Court Press bars High Life Lounge, El Bait Shop and The Library. The special is only available on Fridays during Lent. The all-you-can-eat option is $8.95. At High Life Lounge and El Bait Shop, the special comes with tots (you can substitute fries if you want) and at The Library, french fries are included. Add a side of coleslaw for $1 more. If all-you-can-eat isn’t for you, a three-piece fish and chips meal is available for $6.95.

High Life Lounge and el Bait Shop: 200 S.W. Second St. (11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday); University Library Café: 3506 University Ave. (11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday).
