Smokey D’s owners win $30,000 in national barbecue competition

Darren and Sherry Warth, the couple behind the Des Moines chain Smokey D’s BBQ, won $30,000 in prizes over the weekend at the Sam’s Club National BBQ competition in Bentonville, Ark. The duo got first place in ribs, eighth place in chicken and were awarded Reserve Grand Champions for the weekend.

The Sam’s Club series started with 750 teams at local events like the one in May in St. Charles, Mo., where Smokey D’s won Reserve Grand Champion in May. Earlier this month the Warths won the American Royals competition in Kansas City.

Next up for the couple is the Kingsford Invitational competition Nov. 8-9 in New York City where more than $50,000 is up for grabs.
