Danny Heggen is best known for fronting the folk-rock band Seedlings. Mickey Davis creates electronic music under the name Is Home Is. This week they unveil the sound of their new collaborative project, Maids, with an EP and show at Vaudeville Mews.

“One thing I’ve learned from playing music with Seedlings it that you spend so much time playing songs with a band that by the time you actually record them you’re tired of the songs and are ready to move on,” Heggen said. “The exciting thing about Maids is we reversed that, writing and producing the project first and now we get to play. The exciting element to me is that no one knows what it will sound like.”

The Maids EP is a combination of original songs as well as two covers, “This Will Be Our Year” by the Zombies and “Seashell Tell” by M. Ward. Heggen recorded himself singing several songs, then sent the recordings to Davis for him to write music around. One Maids song started with a composition by Davis, for which Heggen then wrote lyrics.

“I’ve always found that a solid hook is what makes a song approachable. Mickey’s songs aren’t linear. His compositions aren’t simple,” Heggen said. “We’ve had to figure out how to meet in the middle.”
