Kickback Cafe offers tunes, tasty food in Grimes

When you think of dining options on small town Iowa main streets, you probably picture hearty, greasy spoons that have been around forever. Kickback Cafe is not like that. The restaurant opened in June in the former New Morning Coffee House location in a downtown area that is undergoing major restoration.

The menu includes roasted beet salads, a quiche of the day and sandwiches available on south union bread or in white or whole grain wraps. It’s a fresh, light menu that still has some familiar options like a hamburger or roast turkey.

For my lunch I went with the grilled caprese ($7.99) in wrap form. It’s a juicy combo of tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil and a balsamic reduction served with homemade chips, fries, cottage cheese, coleslaw or fruit. It was a tasty lunch that didn’t weigh me down, even though I ordered fries for my side.

My co-worker ordered a burger, a 1/3 hand-packed patty on a South Union ciabatta bun. It looked good and came topped with lettuce and tomato. Cheese, pickles and red onion are 50 cents extra.

The Kickback Cafe has a lot of nice woodwork inside, with counter space and tables to sit at. The tables feature unique seats that seem to have been made out of old tractor seats. It’s a unique touch that gives kickback an extra bit of character.

Bright Giant frontman Josh Davis performs at the cafe regularly and helps book other acts into the space as well, giving a nice musical outlet for the suburb. Upcoming shows include Davis and Will Locker (Oct. 25), Pat Cook of Electric Rag Band (Saturday), Dakota Park (Nov. 11) and Randy Burk (Nov. 30).

At the moment the area around Kickback Cafe is kind of torn up and under construction, but once the work is all done the restaurant should be a nice destination for a new kind of main street.
