Joe Lawler’s music resolutions for 2014
Published on December 31st, 2013 | by Joe Lawler
After parenthood threw off my concert going in 2012, I made a resolution for 2013 to see at least one local concert a week in addition to any other shows I was taking in.
Over the course of the year I saw crowds of fewer than 10 people to more than 10,000. I’m writing this a few days before Christmas and at this point have seen 51 shows. There are a few shows I’m planning to see before Jan. 1, and I hope to close out the year with at least 54. It’s looking like the Des Moines Social Club’s The Bash will be my last one, with Canby, Max Jury, Annalibera and other local acts on the bill.
The end total will come to about 110 different Iowa acts I saw this year. I’ll post the dates, venues and acts for each show this week at dmjuice.com/music.
Having accomplished my goal for 2013, I decided to make a resolution for 2014 as well. Goal: 52 different venues in 52 weeks. The majority of the concerts I saw in 2013 were at Vaudeville Mews, Wooly’s, Gas Lamp and House of Bricks. I want to branch out more in the coming year.
That means I’m going to have to do some traveling to catch shows in Iowa City, Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, Clear Lake and other places, but I’ve made a list and it should be doable. I’ll try to make as many of the shows Iowa acts as possible, but for places like Wells Fargo Arena and the Mid-America Center I’ll probably have to stick to the touring acts coming through.
I hope to see you at a show in 2014.
