What’s black and white and adorable all over? Erin Phillips models three looks from her mostly monochromatic wardrobe.

“All black everything,” is Erin Phillips’ foolproof fashion rule. The 26-year-old Des Moines native starts most outfits with a blank canvas of black, but her personal touches — a stack of quirky bracelets, a brightly colored purse or a sky-high pair of heels — make each look anything but basic.

Though Phillips loves to shop, she’s especially known for her thrifting skills. Her Instagram feed (@thriftykid) is flooded with envy-inducing photos of her amazing finds from around the metro. A pair of Michael Kors boots in mint condition was a recent score. She cites Bargain Basket in the East Village as a favorite, but also scours Goodwill and Salvation Army stores on all sides of the city.

“You have to be realistic,” she said. “You’re not going to win the lottery on every trip. You have to be patient, go often, and be willing to get your hands dirty.”

Phillips finds combing through rack after rack to be therapeutic. Even on days she doesn’t leave with anything, she enjoys the hunt.

As a kid, Phillips idolized Selena and tried to emulate her outfits with what she had at home. These days, her style is a little more refined, a little less Latin pop star. She describes her look as, “’60’s rock ‘n’ roll meets Audrey Hepburn.”

With her looks ranging from edgy to demure (and always based in black), it seems her description is spot on.
