A bill now at the Statehouse would legalize sales of bottle rockets, Roman candles and other fireworks in the state. And it’s sparking debate among Iowans.
Senators of both major parties approved Senate Study Bill 3182 last week in a 10-5 vote in the Senate State Government Committee. The legislation now heads to the Senate floor for further approval.
Sure, fireworks can be dangerous. Yes, a sparkler mishap in Spencer once destroyed nearly five city blocks. Sure, a similar sparkler snafu left 100 people homeless in Remsen in 1936.
But guess what? Fireworks can also be totally awesome. It’s got some of us here at Juice already thinking: If fireworks are legal this July 4th, which one will you most look forward to lighting off?
Who among us can deny the symphony of 100 exploding Black Cats?
Who doesn’t feel shiver in the spine as a Boomer Whistling Moon Traveler takes flight?
Not to mention the enchanting exhaust of smoke balls (set to heavy metal music).
