Title: Project manager, Boesen the Florist in Des Moines/Ankeny

What I do: As a project manager, I manage all of the downtown plantings: spring, summer, fall and winter. I take orders, work retail, maintain the shop and much more. Let’s just say I help make the company run.

Background: I was born and raised in Des Moines, and went to high school at Dowling Catholic. I started working for Boesen the Florist full‐time when I was 20. I started from the bottom up, cleaning bathrooms, delivering full-time, moving to retail and then becoming the head of all special projects.

Why I do what I do: This has been a family-owned business since 1923. Most people wouldn’t think working with your dad is ideal, but my dad worked with his dad and his dad before that. It makes me feel good that I will carry on the tradition. I also do what I do because of the people.

To get away from work, I like to: Sit back and relax. Making people happy every day, all day, is quite the task. So, after a long day at work, I love to sit back, relax and have a glass of my favorite beverage.

The skill I’ve developed most while on the job: There are SO many different levels you have to learn in the floral industry. Whether it is customer service, or setting up a $5,000 wedding; multitasking is key.

How I give back to the community: We donate to churches, fundraisers and nonprofits.

I like to network by: Going to local events. Whether it is Beaverdale Live or a nonprofit event, networking is important to getting your name out there while still doing something worthwhile.

My leadership philosophy: I try to lead by example. I do not always have the right answer and I am not afraid to ask my employees for advice. I don’t pretend to know everything. It takes a team to make our business run, so I surround myself with smart people.

In five years, I see myself: As part owner of Boesen the Florist. My dad, Tom Boesen, is a huge part of the company and is the reason why it has grown to be one of the largest florists in Iowa.

I can help you by: Making ordering flowers easy, regardless of whether it is for the hardest of times or the best of times. I am there every step of the way to ensure you are satisfied.
