Get involved: Art Noir

Published on September 20th, 2013 | by Stephanie Sanyour

What they do:

As a member affiliate of the Des Moines Art Center, Art Noir promotes the prominent collections through social and unexpected events, as well as networking and tours. Art Noir is the perfect place to be for young professionals and others who are passionate about contemporary art.

Their mission:

To promote the Art Center’s events and prominent collections while also bringing exciting and unusual events to Des Moines.

About the group:

Back in 2006, a couple of employees at the Art Center saw the need of a group that would engage the next generation of art lovers in Des Moines. In that year, they established Art Noir to do just that. The group normally has seven board members, with an extra board member during Big Hair Ball. Over the years, the membership has grown to over 300 members.

Activities and events:

There’s something to do about once a month. The activities are sometimes social, at other times educational, and there is happy hour prior to some events at the Art Center.

Some of the events include the popular Big Hair Ball, Artists Ball, social gatherings, and exhibition tours.  Future events coming up are Photography for Social Media on September 19th, and the Midwest Pressed workshop in October 6th.  Another favorite is the Holiday Studio in December 5th, in which participants learn how to make crafty holiday gifts. Most events are held at the Art Center and are free and open to the public.

Who can join?

Truly open to anyone. Though members are mostly in the twenties through forties, there is no age range here. You just have to be passionate about the arts.

Why join this group?

Art Noir is an unintimidating way to learn more about art, especially contemporary art, and it’s a group that would allow you to find unique and unexpected events, plus things you may not find anywhere else. In addition, it’s a great place for artists to network, and meet with others who may be interested to know more about their art.

Staff member for the Art Center and former board member for Art Noir Jenna Ekstrom says young professionals should be interested in art because “ art bridges gaps, and it allows you to connect on a different level, and connect with people who share similar interests to you.” Plus, when it comes to art, there’s no right or wrong answer. It’s all about engaging with others.

How to join:

Visit the website and pay online, call the Art Center, or visit the museum shop.

As long as you’re a member of the Art Center, Art Noir membership is free. The membership fee for the Art Center is $30 for those who consider art as their primary job, and $40 for other individuals. There are no other requirements, though they do host some events for those who are 21 and older.

Perks of being a member:

  • Free or discounted admission to all Art Noir events
  • Discounted admission to special events like the Big Hair Ball and Artist Ball
