Four styles of chili to try

Beans or no beans? Mildly spicy or fiery hot? We can go round-and-round debating the finer points of what makes a good pot of chili, but it’s more fun to just eat it — especially as the weather begins to cool. Chilly evenings call for big bowls of chili, and local spots offer a variety of styles to sample until you find your favorite.

1. Angelo’s Pizza Cincinnati-style chili: This is the spot for Cincinnati-style chili, considered by some a region al delicacy. Cincinnati chili features a thinner, sweeter sauce than “traditional” chili, and it often includes spices such as cinnamon or cloves. Cincinnatians eat it over spaghetti, (an option here), or get it plain or on a Coney. Cheese, on ions and beans are add-ons. Medium bowl (plain chili) is $4.29.

2. Ted’s Coney Island chili: This brown chili ($2.45 for 12 ounces) is more like a gravy, smooth and savory. Try it on the restaurant’s well-known Coneys, or perhaps a ham burger Coney. Less a meal in itself and more a topping or side dish, the chili is on the thinner side.

3. Manhattan Deli chili: Though more famous for its hoagies and Italian subs, Manhattan Deli serves a mild and tomato-y chili, packed with beans and meat. It’s thick and full of onion and tomato pieces — so one bowl is all you need to get that rib-sticking “I’m full” feeling. A 12-ounce serving is $3.54.

4. George the Chili King: A Des Moines staple, this joint has been serving up bowls of steaming chili since 1952. The meaty chili includes beans and comes in a variety of forms: Get it in a bowl ($3.09), on hotdogs or over fries. Toppings include cheddar cheese and onions.
