1. Classic Frozen Custard – A south side favorite, this local landmark serves its namesake in a variety of every changing flavors ranging from New York cheesecake to peach. They offer generous portion sizes (pro-tip: the junior is enough ice cream for most adults) and a variety of specialty sundaes including the Grasshopper, which features a strong note of crème de menthe.

2. Over The Top – A recent addition to the Des Moines area frozen treat scene, this tasty shop won the National Ice Cream Retailers Association 2013 Best New Flavor silver medal for their Sweet ‘n’ Salty Pretzel ice cream.  Bonus: They serve a tiny scoop of ice cream free of charge onto top of your regular scoop. Double bonus: If ice cream is not enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, Over The Top also sells a variety of chocolates and candies including handmade truffles.

3. Granny’s Sweet Freeze Shop – It is easy to miss this small storefront tucked into a frontage road in the far northeast section of Des Moines. What is not to be missed however is the delicious rotating set of soft serve flavors to be had here. July’s flavor of the month, Dreamsicle, provides a perfect segue into childhood memories of the popsicle of the same name, with a flavor profile that is a bit more refined.

4. Dairy Zone – Touting itself as an “Eastside Tradition” this shop offers classic family friendly ice cream shop favorites including a delicious banana split featuring strawberry pieces, pineapple chunks, and chocolate syrup. They also offer a menu of sandwiches and fried favorites if you are looking to turn your dessert trip into a whole meal.
