Fortune names Des Moines No. 1 ‘up-and-coming’ downtown

Published on July 21st, 2014 | by Josh Hafner

Fortune magazine named Des Moines number one in its list of “5 cities with up-and-coming downtowns” this month.

In a video report, Fortune editor Leigh Gallagher placed the city’s downtown ahead of Kansas City, Mo., Allentown, Pa., Louisville, Ky. and Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Des Moines, Iowa is often known as the number one spot for insurance companies, but the city is also getting its hip on, too,” says Gallagher, author of “The End of Suburbs,” a book chronicling the resurgence of American cities.

Gallagher goes on to praise the cultural cool of Des Moines’ 80/35 Music Festival, its support for start-up companies and incubators.

She also notes that Des Moines’ three restaurants whose chefs were named James Beard Awards semifinalists (Centro, Proof and Cafe di Scala) all operate in downtown. Watch the clip here.
