Five Jazz in July shows not to miss

During the month of July Metro Arts Alliance is hosting its annual Jazz in July concert series, featuring 15 concerts around the metro area.

If you can’t make it to them all, here are five that are definitely worth your time.

July 3: The Turner Center Jazz Orchestra kicks off the series with a pre-Yankee Doodle Pops concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Iowa State Capitol West Terrace, 1007 E. Grand Ave.

July 6: German jazz harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens and Yucatan bassist by way of Central College Gabriel Espinosa perform with their project Celebrando at Evelyn K. Davis Park, 1500 Forest Ave. One Nite Stand plays at 3:40 p.m., Celebrando at 6:30 p.m.

July 12: Iowan Roxi Copland returns to perform in the Sylvan Theater at Greenwood Park, 4500 Grand Ave., starting at 6:30 p.m.

July 20: The Sixth Avenue Corridor between College and Washington streets features bands from 3-11 p.m., including Bella Soul featuring Tina Haase-Findlay, Flipside, Madison Ray & All the Single Ladies and Brian Holtz Band.

July 27: Jazz in July ends with a finale concert at 5 p.m. at West Glen Town Center, 5465 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines. The Freddy Gazzo Band, Dave Rezek’s Alpha State Agents and Junior Jazz band perform.
