Blow dry bars popping up in Des Moines

You’ve got a big event coming up. Maybe your best friend is getting married, maybe you have a job interview or maybe you’ve just got a big night out planned. You would like a new style, but you don’t want to go in for a cut.

That’s why blow dry bars, which offer styling services but leave the cutting and coloring to the salons, have risen in popularity in larger cities. Penelopie Beauty Bar opened up last week in Clive, and Blo Blow Dry Bar is planned for the East Village.

Katie Theulen, 26, and Bopha Mom-Baccam, 31, are co-owners of Penelopie. Kristin Broers, 35, plans to open a franchise of the Canadian company, Blo Blow Dry Bar, in May at East Sixth and Locust streets in the East Village. Broers described the business as similar to a nail salon, with seven set styles women can choose from.

“Wash, blow and go is kind of the mantra,” Broers said. “You go in, pay your $40 and leave looking kind of like a rock star. It’s like a drive-in for your hair.”

Broers first encountered the concept while visiting a friend in California. The concept is popular on the coasts, and Broers, who works in pharmaceuticals, started looking around for a way to franchise the idea and bring it to Iowa.

Penelopie Beauty Bar, at 12931 University Avenue Suite 104 in Clive, will offer updos, dry styles and makeup application. It will also offer parties for bachelorettes, wedding parties or a girls’ night out.
