Shotgun Betty’s brings the country

West Glen Town Center has plenty of options for a fun night out, including a comedy club, piano bar, sports bar and upscale cocktail lounge. But until the recent opening of Shotgun Betty’s, there wasn’t any place for country fans to gather.

Business partners Tom Baldwin and Steve McFadden saw an opportunity when 515 Ultra Lounge came up for sale.

“West Glen needs a country bar,” Baldwin said.

The bar is a mix of old and new, with a state-of-the art sound system and TVs but plenty of vintage touches. Some of those touches include reclaimed wood throughout the bar, a 1930s motel vacancy sign that’s been turned into a pool table light, and old turkey feeders that have been converted into dangling lights.

When converting the bar into Shotgun Betty’s, the owners and their crew searched antique shops and auctions to find the perfect pieces to give it a Southern, rockabilly feel.
They used old Iowa barn boards to create the hardwood floor and bought a license plate collection to line the top of the bar. The business partners said they went through about 40 names before settling on Shotgun Betty’s to fit the look they were aiming for.

On a recent Saturday night, genuine-looking cowboys sat at the bar while girls in high heels and mini dresses filled the tables around the room. People dropped peanut shells on the floor and sang along to the country music. When the DJ played a favorite song, people yelled to turn it up and clapped along. A few couples even turned the small spaces between tables into their own private dance floors.

Baldwin described Shotgun Betty’s as a true country bar that will play old country favorites and newer country songs later in the evening.

“It will be a nice complement to the area,” he said.

Shotgun Betty’s is a whiskey bar (including Fireball) that also serves old-school beers like Hamm’s and Old Style alongside a wide variety of other drink offerings.

The bar is open seven days a week with a happy hour every day from 3 to 7 p.m.
