Thursday: Comedian Nick Swardson performs at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames. Swardson is known for his roles in films like “Grown Ups 2,” “Grandma’s boy” and “30 Minutes or Less,” as well as his regular part as the prostitute Terry on “Reno 911.” $20 through midwestix.com.
Friday: The Young Professionals Connection hosts its annual kick-off party at 5:30 p.m. at the Des Moines Social Club’s Kum & Go Theater, 900 Mulberry St. The event will pair dancing and partying with information about the group’s committees and goals in 2014. Battle at the Barn

Sunday: Celebrate the strong, malty deliciousness of the German lager doppelbock during the Doppelbock Feast at 1 p.m. at Hessen Haus, 101 Fourth St. Two hogs will be roasted and the wearing of dirndls and leaderhosen is encouraged. Party! Party! will perform, there will be a bier bong and a sausage king and queen will be crowned.
