Thursday: Comedian Nick Swardson performs at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames. Swardson is known for his roles in films like “Grown Ups 2,” “Grandma’s boy” and “30 Minutes or Less,” as well as his regular part as the prostitute Terry on “Reno 911.” $20 through midwestix.com.

YPC kickoff

Friday: The Young Professionals Connection hosts its annual kick-off party at 5:30 p.m. at the Des Moines Social Club’s Kum & Go Theater, 900 Mulberry St. The event will pair dancing and partying with information about the group’s committees and goals in 2014. ‘American Idiot’

Friday-Saturday: Green Day’s album “American Idiot” comes to the stage
as a musical at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 5 and 9 p.m. Saturday at the Des Moines Civic Center, 221 Walnut St. The play tells the story of three teens looking to escape from the safety of suburbia, and the turbulent world they fall into. $30-$99 through Ticketmaster.

Battle at the Barn

Friday-Saturday: Celebrate things that go vroom at the annual Battle at the Barn, with doors opening at noon Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The event features races with go-carts, bikes, lawn mowers and a “Run What Ya Brung” race. $11-$20. Go to battleatthebarn.com.

Doppelbock Feast

Sunday: Celebrate the strong, malty deliciousness of the German lager doppelbock during the Doppelbock Feast at 1 p.m. at Hessen Haus, 101 Fourth St. Two hogs will be roasted and the wearing of dirndls and leaderhosen is encouraged. Party! Party! will perform, there will be a bier bong and a sausage king and queen will be crowned.
