At home with: Joey Patino, 29

When Joey Patino moved to Iowa as a young college student, he did not intend to stay.

“I moved here with a boyfriend, attended Grand View University, and somewhere in there, I fell in love with Des Moines,” he said.

College ended, the relationship ended, but Patino’s love for Des Moines remained. When he decided to start house hunting, there was no doubt he would live downtown. “Living here puts you in the center of everything. From East Village to Sherman Hill to Court Avenue, nothing is very far. And my commute to work is about 5 minutes round trip.” (Patino is the General Manager of Salon W in the East Village.)

After touring almost every apartment building in the downtown area, Patino found he was drawn to the open floor plans, south-facing windows, and views of the river that Brown Camp Lofts provided.

The former warehouse has a cool, industrial aesthetic that also appealed to Patino. “I love the visible history of this building,” he said. “The exposed brick, beams, and concrete add an innate sense of character.”

Patino moved in last June and has slowly made the two-bedroom loft his own. “It felt very raw at first, but I’ve added elements to make if look and feel warmer. It’s a work in progress, but it feels like home,” he said.

The space is neat and uncluttered; it is apparent that each piece of furniture and every item of décor has been thoughtfully selected.

“Editing is so important in a smaller space … For investment pieces I chose classic styles and then I can switch out accessories by season. It’s easy to add a new pillow, duvet cover, or even kitchen towels when you’re in the mood for a change.”

Renovation Home, K.Renee, Eden and Village Boutique are local favorites for furniture and home goods. His kitchen table was custom-built by carpenter Mike Harris.

Patino replaced outdated can lights and a broken ceiling fan with stunning fixtures from West Elm. “It’s amazing what a big impact a little change can have.”

Eventually, he plans to tackle bigger projects, like a kitchen renovation.

Patino loves to throw parties and is known for his attention to detail and gourmet meals. “I love any reason to celebrate. I love to cook, but I also want to be able to spend time with my guests,” he says. “This space is the perfect place for both.”
