3 QUESTIONS WITH… RYAN STIER
Published on January 28th, 2014 | by Joe Lawler
Ryan Stier, 27, is the guitarist for Annalibera, performing at 9 p.m. Sunday at Vaudeville Mews, 212 Fourth St.
Q: You play with both the River Monks and Annalibera. How do you split the time between the two?
We basically just have to plan around each other. I haven’t really run into a lot of difficulties with that. It definitely takes a little bit of coordination. Both bands are pretty good at planning out pretty far in advance.
Q: You’ve been posting about the River Monks being in the studio. Are you working on a follow up to “Jovials”?
We’re actually mastering that on Thursday, so we’ll be looking into printing that soon. We’ve got a Des Moines release date of May 16, so we’ll be preparing for that over the next few months. We’ll be doing a pre-worldwide release CD tour for a couple weeks in March, then officially release the CD, vinyl and digital in May.
Q: Did you have a different approach toward making this album than “Jovials”?
This was definitely a different experience than “Jovials.” That album was written as we were recording it, so we had a lot of freedom and we were recording it ourselves so we didn’t have to worry about the costs. We were trying to figure out what direction we wanted to go as a band. At this point we’ve learned our limits and capabilities as a group. We didn’t want to get too far away from the feel of “Jovials.” That was pretty intimate; some of the songs it felt like you were sitting in the room with us.
