3 Questions with Chris Backstrom

Chris Backstrom is the singer/guitarist for Best of Fools, which plays a CD release show at 9 p.m. Thursday at House of Bricks, 525 E. Grand Ave.
Q: How did the group get together?
It’s been a long process. It started out as me and Brett (Upchurch, guitarist) and we kind of acquired people over time. We have six members now, but our sax player (Dave Higdon) is leaving after the CD release show to go to audio engineering school. Saxophone is an integral part of our sound, so we’ll be looking to replace him for sure.
Q: What can you tell me about the new album, “Fire in the Sky”?
It’s the first one that we’ve done some real studio work on. We still did it ourselves, but we took a long time doing it, about six months — way longer than we wanted to. Mostly it’s new songs that we wanted to get out there. We want it to be a pretty big tool to market ourselves over the next few years, hopefully making a name for ourselves.
Q: Now that it’s done, what comes next?
We spent a lot of time playing covers in places where you just want to keep the crowd happy. Now we’re looking to book into venues that are specific to original music. We want to start gigging in college towns and hopefully move on to festivals from there. I think that’s our target audience.
