Score! arcade bar to open this month in Ames

Over the last six months Des Moines has seen two arcade bars open, Up-Down and Barcadium. Now Ames is getting in on the action. Score!, a bar and arcade is expected to open March 14 at 124 Welch Ave., Ames.
Dan Green, 26, one of the bar’s owners, said Score! is a much smaller space than either of the Des Moines arcade, with room for about 10 games and 85 people. Rather than try to compete with the large numbers, Green said the focus will be on making Score! a “cool little lounge.”
Green said Score! will have “Mortal Kombat II,” “Street Fighter vs. X-Men,” “Area 51″ and more, along with some “multicade” cabinets that let players select different games. Each game will cost a quarter. There will also be a couch area that lets people play console games like “Mario Kart.”
Green is the organizer of the electronic music festival 515 Alive, but he doesn’t expect DJs to be a regular feature. He said the space inside “Score!” isn’t big enough for that, but that the bar is considering options for occasional events.
